Help over the school holidays

School holidays can be challenging in all sorts of ways, and for families whose children receive free school lunches term-time, it’s especially hard financially. Not only is there the added expense of lunches but as every parent knows, however hard you try and economise you end up spending more when the children are off school.

So BFAN is helping by providing packs including basic foods such as cereals, pasta, soups, tinned fruit and vegetables, and treats like biscuits and squash. With the help of local schools to identify recipients most in need, we provided more food equal to more than 1350 meals and 260 desserts plus miscellaneous food and toiletries to families in Central Bedfordshire in July 2015 to help over the summer school holidays.

Local people and organisations kindly donate the food items and generous monetary donations made to BFAN enable us to buy the extra treats.

Special thanks to Biggleswade Sandy Lions, St Andrews Church Biggleswade, St James Church Silsoe, Co-op in Barton and its customers, for help and donations.

Typical is this message from one mum: “I just wanted to say thank you from me and my children, the packs that u have given us today have been overwhelming, the kids are so excited. The food is going to help so much. So again thank you.”

Food can be donated in Preen Reuse Centre during opening hours, at local collection points, or contact us to arrange pick up large quantities.

Support your local Network

Bedfordshire Food Aid Network (BFAN) collects donated food ‘en masse’ and has storage facilities for local food parcel providers to use as ‘larders’. Donated food is used to help local families during school holidays when the children aren’t receiving free school meals; and food stocks are also passed on to local community groups which give out daily food parcels, and to organisations providing emergency accommodation. We also collect and distribute toiletries and household cleaning products.

The Network is financially supported by Preen and all food and toiletries is used in Bedfordshire to feed people who are in financial crisis.

To donate food to the Network

Drop off at a Preen Reuse Centre or a local BFAN Collection Point, or for large quantities, please contact the Network Co-ordinator, tel. 01767 600 332 or email
